How the NZ Public Holiday Impact works
The NZ Public Holiday Impact calculator counts the genuine working days inside a date range, subtracting weekends and every New Zealand public holiday that lands inside it — so the number you plan against is the number you can actually work. Block out a six-week window over a New Zealand summer and count only the weekends, and you will overstate your capacity: between Christmas and Waitangi Day, and again around Easter and Matariki, a handful of working days quietly disappear into public holidays.
Nationally, New Zealand observes eleven public holidays — New Year's Day and the Day after New Year's Day, Waitangi Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, ANZAC Day, King's Birthday, Matariki, Labour Day, Christmas Day and Boxing Day. Several Mondayise when they fall on a weekend, shifting the day off into your working week, and Matariki's date is set year by year rather than fixed, so the holidays that fall inside a given range genuinely depend on the year. That is exactly the kind of thing a calculator carrying the current calendar gets right and a mental count gets wrong.
On top of the national holidays, each region keeps its own anniversary day — Auckland, Wellington, Canterbury, Otago and the rest — that is a public holiday only in that region. Two teams working the identical date range can therefore have a different number of working days depending on where they sit. The calculator surfaces the regional anniversary days that fall inside your range rather than burying them in a national total, and lets you toggle whether the endpoints count and add company-specific shutdown days, so the figure reflects the days your team is genuinely open.
Worked example
Take a delivery window from Monday 19 January 2026 to Friday 13 February 2026 — four working weeks on paper, so twenty weekday slots. Auckland Anniversary falls on Monday 26 January and Waitangi Day on Friday 6 February. For an Auckland team, both are closures inside the range, dropping the real count to eighteen working days. For a Christchurch team, Auckland Anniversary does not apply, so only Waitangi Day comes out — nineteen working days over the same dates. Same calendar window, two different capacities, entirely because of where the work is being done.

Does this include regional anniversary days?
Yes, and it calls them out separately. Each New Zealand region keeps its own anniversary day that is a public holiday only there, so the working days over an identical range can differ between two cities. The calculator surfaces which regional anniversary days fall inside your window so you can plan around the ones that apply to the office actually doing the work.
How does Mondayisation affect the count?
When New Year's Day, the Day after, Waitangi Day, ANZAC Day, Christmas Day or Boxing Day falls on a weekend, the holiday is observed on the following Monday or Tuesday instead — moving the day off into your working week. The calculator applies the observed date, not the nominal one, so a holiday that Mondayises still comes out of your working-day count on the right day.
Can I add our own company shutdown days?
Yes. On top of the national and regional public holidays, you can add custom closures — a Christmas shutdown, a stocktake day, or any dates your business is closed — and toggle whether the start and end dates themselves count.
