How the Manufacturing Lead Time Calculator works
The Manufacturing Lead Time Calculator projects a completion date from the work content of a job and the shift pattern the plant runs. Enter the start date, how many single-shift days of work the job represents, and how many shifts a day you run — the tool compresses the work accordingly and lays the result across the working calendar.
Separating work content from shift pattern is what makes the answer transferable. A job quoted as twelve days of work is twelve days only on a single shift; run two shifts and it occupies six working days, run three and it occupies four. Quoting a customer a lead time without stating the shift assumption behind it is how the same job gets promised in two very different timeframes by two different planners. The calculator reports the compressed figure and, alongside it, what the same job would take on one shift — which is the number to look at when you are deciding whether adding a shift is worth it.
The compression is a straightforward division rounded up, because a partly used shift still occupies a working day on the calendar. That model fits work that parallelises cleanly across shifts, which most volume production does. It fits badly where a process has a fixed cycle time that no amount of manning shortens — a cure, an anneal, a fermentation — and for those the constraint is elapsed time rather than shift capacity, so enter the elapsed working days directly and leave the shift count at one. The calendar itself still governs: weekends, public holidays and any plant shutdown you add as a custom closure all push the completion date out regardless of how many shifts you run through the days that remain.
Worked example
A job carrying twelve single-shift days of work starts on Monday, 1 June 2026 on a US calendar. Run one shift and it finishes on Wednesday, 17 June. Run three shifts and the work compresses to four working days, completing on Friday, 5 June — nearly a fortnight earlier from the same work content. The calculator shows both, so the cost of the extra shifts can be weighed against the eight working days they buy.
Frequently asked questions
What counts as a "single-shift day" of work?
The work content of the job expressed as the number of days it would occupy running one shift — which is how most routings and standard times are held. If your figure is in hours, divide by the length of one shift before entering it. Keeping the input in work content rather than in calendar days is what lets the shift pattern change the answer instead of being baked into it.
Does running three shifts really cut the lead time to a third?
For work that parallelises across shifts, close to it — subject to rounding up to whole working days. It does not hold where a fixed process time governs: a twenty-four-hour cure takes twenty-four hours whether one crew or three are watching it. For those steps the constraint is elapsed time, so enter the elapsed working days as the work content and set shifts to one, then add any manned steps separately.
How do I model a plant shutdown?
Add the shutdown dates to the custom holidays field and they stop counting as working days, pushing the completion date out by the working days lost. This is the right treatment for an annual close-down, a maintenance week or a site-wide stop.
