How the NZ Filing Same-Day Cutoff works
The NZ Filing Same-Day Cutoff calculator answers the question a date alone cannot: given the moment you actually submitted, which working day does the registry treat the filing as lodged on? Enter the submission date and time, the registry’s daily cut-off, and the period the rule allows, and the tool determines the effective lodgement day and then computes the deadline from it.
A deadline is a date; a cut-off is a time on that date, and clearing one without the other is how filings are recorded a day later than intended. Submit at 16:55 against a 17:00 cut-off on a working day and the filing is lodged that day. Submit at 17:30 and it is lodged the next working day — and if that submission was on a Friday, the next working day is Monday, so thirty-five minutes has cost three calendar days. Submit at any time on a weekend or public holiday and the same rule applies from the next day the registry is open. The calculator states which of those three situations you are in and why, rather than only returning a date.
The lodgement day it determines then becomes day zero for the period you enter, which is the point of computing both together: a period counted from the day you thought you filed will be a working day out if the cut-off pushed you over. New Zealand rules express periods in two units that are not interchangeable — plain calendar days count everything, working days step over weekends and public holidays — so set the toggle to match the rule you are working to. Two cautions: cut-off times differ between registries and between electronic and counter lodgement, so use the one published for the registry you are filing in rather than assuming 17:00; and regional anniversary days close some registries and not others, which the national holiday calendar will not capture on its own.
Worked example
A document is submitted at 17:30 on Friday, 5 June 2026 against a 17:00 cut-off. Because it arrived after the cut-off, it is treated as lodged on the next working day — Monday, 8 June. A ten-working-day period then runs from that Monday rather than from the Friday, so every downstream date moves with it. Submit the identical document at 16:30 the same afternoon and it lodges on the Friday, pulling the whole schedule a working day earlier for the sake of an hour.
Frequently asked questions
What happens if I submit after the cut-off?
The filing is treated as lodged on the next working day, and the period you are counting runs from that day rather than from the day you pressed send. On a Friday evening that means Monday, and before a public holiday it can mean Tuesday — so a few minutes past the cut-off routinely costs three or four calendar days. The calculator tells you which lodgement day applies and states the reason.
Is the cut-off always 17:00?
No. Cut-off times vary between registries, and electronic lodgement frequently has a later cut-off than counter lodgement at the same registry. The 17:00 default here is a common one, not a rule. Check the published cut-off for the specific registry and lodgement channel you are using and enter that — assuming a later cut-off than actually applies is the expensive direction to be wrong in.
Do regional anniversary days affect this?
They can. New Zealand’s regional anniversary days are observed in some regions and not others, so a registry in one part of the country may be closed on a day another is open. A national holiday calendar will not capture that distinction. If your filing period runs across an anniversary day for the region your registry sits in, add it as a custom closure so the count steps over it.
